Journey Through the Universe (Journey), one of the leading astronomy education and outreach programs on Hawai驶i Island, recently brought together students and teachers with astronomers, engineers and STEM professionals.
TMT鈥檚 Wide-Field Optical Spectrometer (WFOS), one of its three first-light instruments, successfully completed its Conceptual Design Review in February 2022. This review completed the conceptual design phase and ushered WFOS into its Preliminary Design Phase.

The fabrication of TMT鈥檚 primary mirror segments at Coherent Inc. in California continues to progress well. To date, a total of 19 M1 polished roundels have been delivered to TMT鈥檚 secure warehouse facility for storage.
One of the things I鈥檝e enjoyed most about working on TMT has been the opportunity to do educational outreach at local schools. For example, over the past few weeks I鈥檝e been teaching astrobiology at an elementary school. So, I鈥檓 always on the lookout for interesting and novel education materials to help convey the excitement of astronomy to the next generation.
Dr. Fengchuan Liu has been named project manager of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), where he will lead the observatory design and development. He most recently served as acting project manager and was also the deputy project manager from 2015 to 2020. He is currently based in Hilo on Hawaii Island.
TMT was pleased to join the Maunakea Observatories in celebrating AstroDay on November 14, 2021 at Kona Commons Shopping Center in Kona. AstroDay continues to be a leading community outreach program for the observatories. This time around, the AstroDay celebration event was back 鈥渋n-person,鈥 with its share of free, family-friendly astronomy activities.
